Oversize scrapbook containing clippings, photographs and memorabilia of the Hartness family during World War II, George Hartness' service in the U.S. Marine Corps and duty in the Pacific Theatre; including military awards and accomplishments, 1943-1982; graduation from Armored Force School, 1943; graduation from 14th reserve officers' class, 1943; Bronze Star awarded, 1944; designation as Major in the US Marine Crop, 1976; certificate of military retirement, 1982. Personal photographs taken during military service with Marine Company A, 4th tank battalion include Hartness's time stationed at Camp Pendleton (California), and Pearl Harbor (Hawaii); the Saipan and Tinian invasions in the Marianas Islands, 1944; the battle of Iwo Jima against Japanese armed forces, 1945; and Navy Day Celebration, 1946, in Columbia, S.C. Articles and clippings, 1959-1964, from newspapers of Columbia, S.C., reflect family activities, biography, and history of Columbia and South Carolina; features include: "George E. Walker... and a Collection of South Caroliniana Rediscovered," re the donation of the George E. Walker papers to USC (The State newspaper, 28 June 1959); articles re "the condensed history of our state," include: "South Carolina: How It Began;" "Lords Proprietors in South Carolina"; "Under Royal Government" (Columbia Record, 11 Mar. 1959); "This man of many talents shares skill with others," re Larry Dobson's establishment of a men's garden club and membership in Puppeteers of America (Columbia Record, 2 Jan. 1964). Other events in the life of George Hartness documented with undated newspaper and magazine clippings relate to his education at Columbia High School, his glee club membership and graduation; his 1954 marriage to Isola Carmen Sherrerd; Hartness's support of and involvement with the Richland County Public Library and Columbia Museum of Art; the Hartness family home in Lexington County, S.C., called "Shadblow"; the debutante ball of Hartness's daughter, Sandra Hartness; an article by Dorothy Heyward entitled, "Anyone Here Know Porgy," re DuBose Heyward's creation of the character Porgy, inspired by an African American man from Charleston, S.C., known as "Goat-Sammy Smalls" and the character's incarnations in the subsequent book, play, opera and movie known as Porgy and Bess; article by Jack Denton Scott entitled, "A Man's Place is in the Kitchen," re argument that women are not actually good cooks or chefs because men have more refined tastes. Other items include the diploma of Isola Carmen Sherrerd Harness from Penn Hall Junior College; postcards from the Chicago World's fair of 1933; Gloucester, Massachusetts; and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in Manhattan; the itinerary for the Joseph Stanley Old South Tour of Columbia, including Hartness's home "Shadblow," 1980; and an essay re Columbia's Red Light District and houses of prostitution, written in 1980.
